With the 2019 general elections about two years away, the campaign posters of former vice president Atiku Abubakar are already being circulated across kebbi state.
Atiku, who visited the state at the weekend during the Abdullahi Fodio 1805 book launch at the Emir of Gwandu’s palace was surrounded by political supporters chanting “Sai Atiku Turaki Adamawa for President 2019”
The former vice president, who was the chief launcher at the occasion, donated N10 million naira.
The projection and intrigues over who becomes the party’s standard bearer may come to the fore at the party’s national convention billed for the first quarter of this year.
Although, the president is yet to state, categorically, whether or not he will be vying for a second term in office, From all indications, however, the convention will be a veritable ground to launch his bid; barring any huddle
Apart from former vice-president Atiku Abubakar, who is believed to be a front-runner, should the President decline to continue on account of age or ill-health, Rabiu Kwankwaso, a former government from the north in the last administration is also believed to be interested
Nasir El-Rufai, who has been thrown up as a possible successor has the home-front to contend with. Kaduna state, which he presides over has been a theatre of ethno-religious war since the beginning of the year. Besides, what is happening in Kaduna makes him an unlikely choice, since Christians in the North and Southern part of the country may rather not come near him.
APC chieftains , are not yet convinced of any available person who appeals to the people in the country, especially the north like President Buhari, and are not contemplating looking elsewhere for a candidate .
