Darius Ishaku, of Taraba state of Nigeria, has blazed the trail as the first governor to ban the use of polythene bags in Nigeria.
He gave the Order, banning the use of polythene bags and other relative products in the state at the launch of the State Water, Sanitation and Hygiene Policy Implementation.
He said “Emphases will be shifted to the use of biodegradable materials such as paper bags In order to set the pace for Clean Nigeria, I wish to declare a ban on the use of polythene bags and other relative products in Taraba state”.
Although the move by Governor Ishaku is no doubt a smart one that will prompt other state governors to follow suit, the implementation will be another issue entirely. Also will be the definition of the ‘Other relative products’
While cynics may say that he has scored a political point a few days to being sworn in for a second term in office, he can take consolation in the saying that “When there is a will, there is a way”.
